RSCs – Stimulating and Supporting Innovation in Learning
The JISC is a strategic advisory committee working on behalf of the funding bodies for further and higher education (FE and HE) in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It also works in partnership with the Research Councils.
The JISC promotes the innovative application and use of information systems and information technology in FE and HE across the UK by providing vision and leadership and funding the network infrastructure, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and information services, development projects and high quality materials for education.
Its central role ensures that the uptake of new technologies and methods is cost-effective, comprehensive and well focused. Members of the JISC and its committees are senior managers, academics and technology experts from across the education sector. This provides strong links with the community and ensures the JISC remains responsive to the changing needs of FE and HE.
The JISC funds a wide and growing number of national services for the benefit of the further and higher education and research communities. The JISC Services and initiatives are able to help institutions make better use of the opportunities that Communication and Information Technology (C & IT) offers. They provide training, support and advice to enable the community to take full advantage of the network, electronic information and content. Most services and initiatives are free at the point of use, although some services host datasets, which are only available by institutional subscription.
To assist with the planning and ground work for the creation of the information infrastructure the JISC set up six committees to oversee different areas of activity. The JISC Executive provides further assistance to the various committees and the JISC. Membership of committees is drawn from higher education, further education and the research sector, with some contributions and views from external sources.
