Heather for FE Colleges

What is Heather?

Heather is a high quality computer voice. In an arrangement with CALL Scotland, the Regional Support Centre Scotland North & East has arranged for Heather to be available for FREE to all Further Education colleges, their students and support services.

Heather, developed by Cereproc, is increasingly acknowledged as the synthetic voice of choice which, when installed on a college network or a personal computer or laptop, will work with most SAPI 5 text-to-speech programs.

Why use Heather?

The JISC Regional Support Centre Scotland North & East believes it is the right of all FE students in Scotland who need it to be able to read and listen to learning materials and resources using a high quality computer voice.

Heather is an important tool for empowering and enhancing the learning experience, particularly for those students with literacy difficulties such as dyslexia.

Once installed on a computer, Heather will read Word documents, PDF files, web pages and other important e-learning materials.

Heather can also be used to create audio files which can then be listened to on a portable music device or even on your computer – this can benefit learners who find print and electronic materials difficult to read.

A quality computer voice is the perfect complement to the highly popular EduApps open source software packages that RSC Scotland North & East already makes freely available in the form of AccessApps, MyStudyBar, MyVisBar and others.
