Introduction
Poetry is often seen as difficult as it is the most compressed form of writing in literature. Anything
not completely necessary is edited out by
the poet. As we saw with punctuation, the key feature here is the choices that the writer has made -
careful deliberate choices. This poem is
a mere 26 words long, though it has been calculated that the average speaker of English probably has
a working vocabulary of over 20,000
words.
Your first task here is to read the poem carefully once again and make sure that you understand the
meaning of each of the individual words.
Next we need to look at how those words are fitted together to form the particular meaning of the poem.
