How Can e-Portfolios Support 21st Century Learning?

e-Portfolios are not a new concept. In various guises, digital presentations of skills and competences, online records of achievement, and action plans with opportunities for reflection have been in use in education for nearly a decade. So what is new about e-portfolios?

This free-to-attend workshop will explore what we mean by e-portfolios and how e-portfolios can support 21st century learning. Drawing on the work of JISC-funded projects and other significant e-portfolio developments, it will provide a snapshot of learning enhanced by e-portfolios in higher, further and continuing education.

Getting Your Email & Information Under Control

Is your email inbox groaning under the weight of unread messages? Are you struggling to find information because you can't remember where you put it, or recognise the title you gave it? Or perhaps you can find what you are after - but is it the most recent version or just one of many outdated copies still lurking on the server? All staff are creating and using more information than ever before. As a result the documents, emails and spreadsheets which should be an asset helping you to carry out your daily work can rapidly turn into a liability which slows you down and makes life harder for you and those who work with you. 'Getting Your Email & Information Under Control' is a full day workshop which provides you with the skills and knowledge you need to regain the upper hand. It's a highly interactive and practical workshop where delegates get to put the skills they have just learnt into action, slowly bringing order to a chaotic mass of seemingly random and unconnected information - hopefully...

Information Security Policies

Information is critical to most of the functions of an education organisation, whether for teaching, research, administration, employment or funding. The effective operation of all those functions depends on reliably accurate information being available when it is needed by those who are authorised to see it, and is not disclosed to those who are not authorised to see it. These factors - accuracy, availability and confidentiality - are all components of information security. This course therefore takes a broad view of what is needed to achieve the necessary level of information security, concentrating almost entirely on people, processes and policies, not on computers or networks.

JISC Online Conference - Innovating e-Learning 2008: 4-7th November

The JISC online conference, Innovating e-Learning 2008, is an important conference for practitioners and managers embedding e-learning into their practice. e-Learning may now have established a foothold in learning and teaching, but are the demands of delivering the curriculum restricting its innovative potential? How can we plan to ensure the best possible e-enhancement of learning in the future? These are the questions the 2008 conference will address.

The conference has two themes each running over two days and will also include guided tours in Second Life facilitated by the JISC Emerge team. During the reading weeks, the two weeks prior to the conference, there will be orientation sessions for delegates new to Second Life. An e-Learning Showcase will provide a shop window on innovative work from JISC e-Learning projects and services, and in-conference social events include a virtual fashion show. Some sessions will also make use of the Elluminate real-time web conferencing system.

The conference takes place in an asynchronous virtual environment, which can be accessed wherever and whenever is convenient to you, and is surprisingly easy to engage with.

“Do virtual worlds have a place in education?”

Virtual Worlds 2008 brings together the best of virtual worlds used in education today, with the opportunity for you to learn about and talk to people who are successfully using the technology with real students. There’s nothing like trying it out for yourself though, so throughout the day, you’ll be able to attend hands-on workshops where you’ll experience actual learning sequences ‘in world’. This participative aspect of Virtual Worlds 2008 promises to make it a conference quite unlike any you’ve experienced before.

  • Meet the Virtual Patient Feel the virtual pulse, this won’t hurt a bit! Daden Ltd, leading virtual world and AI consultancy, introduce their virtual patient technology used by St George’s Hospital, London.
  • Give me the Tools… Put on your hard hat and toe protectors and join Jackie McMillan from Learn Direct & Build (and North Highland College) on a virtual building site. See how virtual worlds are used to teach real life practical skills.

Workshops and presentations are available also from other leading-edge experts in the use of virtual worlds for education, including Altered Learning, Coventry University, Eduserv, Heriot-Watt University, JISC Services, Leeds College of Art, University of the West of Scotland and the University of Edinburgh.

Places for this conference are limited, and demand is expected to be high. Please make your booking early and note that our funding requires us to give preference to persons from Scottish institutions of further and higher education.

e-Portfolio Conference: Providing the Evidence

*** Only a few places remaining! ***

An e-Portfolio is commonly understood to mean a collection of electronic evidence, or a type of learning record. The term may be one of the more popular buzzwords today, but how much do you really know about e-Portfolios?

  • Who legally owns the e-Portfolio?
  • Should we be worrying about what goes into them?
  • Are they the future of personalised learning?
  • And perhaps most importantly, do students really want them?

The Scottish Regional Support Centres (RSCs) invite you to attend: Providing the Evidence, where speakers will be sharing their experiences of e-Portfolios, giving you the information you need to share ideas and make up your own mind.

A range of stimulating presentations and workshops will be provided, with key experiences drawn directly from:

MyStuff (Rachel Hawkins – Open University)
“Developing an open source portfolio system for the OU”

JISC-iPAS (Gill Rowell – JISC-iPAS)
“Addressing plagiarism with Web 2.0 content”

JISC Legal & Records Management Study (A. Charlesworth – Bristol University)
“Looking at the legal issues related to e-Portfolios”

In addition, there will be presentations from Queen Margaret University, University of Dundee, Angus College, Dumfries & Galloway College and the Scottish Qualifications Authority. In the context of the material presented, the programme will also highlight a selection of available open source and commercial e-Portfolio tools.

          Online training in assistive technologies

This new initiative from your RSC will provide online training using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) conferencing software called ‘Instant Presenter’. Using this flexible method of delivery you can attend training sessions without even leaving your desk.

All you require to take part is a Windows-based computer with a Flash enabled browser (a plug-in for Internet Explorer)–you may need to check this with your I.T. department before booking your place.

You’ll also need a set of headphones to listen in. However, if you’d like to take a more interactive part in the session a microphone and web camera will enhance the interactivity of the training.

The first series of tutorials will be 20minute ‘getting to know Instant Presenter’ familiarity sessions and will introduce you to the various tools of the web conferencing software. If successful, we’ll go on to offer a range of assistive technology tutorials using this method.

Sessions will take place on November 15th 12.30-12.50pm and November 22nd 4.00-4.20pm. You ’ll be emailed a hyperlink on the day of the session; selecting it will take you directly to the tutorial.

For those supporting videoconferencing in their organisation, this course will give a broad overview of what is available and how it works. Perhaps more importantly it will give an appreciation of what using VC facilities actually feels like and what the issues can be. The course will include participation in a number of short videoconferences.

          Topics Covered

          • Introduction to videoconferencing
          • National videoconferencing services
          • Components of a videoconferencing system

          Access Management Workshop

After an extremely successful pilot event, Netskills launch a 3-day Access Management workshop in Edinburgh this October.

The introduction of Shibboleth and the JISC's decision to cease funding for Athens after July 2008 means that colleges and universities will shortly have to make a choice about which access management system to use. Organisations can out-source provision, however a viable alternative is to establish and manage your own identity provider server (IdP) for single-sign on access. This new 3-day workshop introduces the core skills required to establish an Identity Provider (IdP) server ready for joining the UK Access Management Federation.

"The aim of the workshop is to assist technical staff preparing their organisation for single sign on," said Netskills trainer Paul Trueman who led development of the workshop. "Understanding how the pieces of the puzzle fit together allows institutions to manage their access cost effectively and more flexibly," he added.

Feedback from the pilot event at Newcastle University was extremely positive. "The event covered a lot of ground and filled the gaps in my knowledge," said one attendee. Another added, "Coming from FE, I found the course to be very useful."

From July of that year, JISC will support access management through the UK access management federation using a technology called 'Shibboleth'. The McShib Forum has been set up to provide an opportunity for interested persons in Scottish tertiary education to meet, share good practice, and learn about the potential, possibilities and pitfalls of implementing Shibboleth. This event is the inaugural meeting of the McShib Forum. The forum will start at 10.30am and continue to 4pm. Lunch will be provided.

            Detecting and Deterring Plagiarism

The issue of plagiarism has been around for centuries, but its impact has escalated with the growth of the world wide web, with its vast range of content, easy opportunities for cut-and-paste, and growing market of commercial sites helping the potential plagiarist. The education sector has seen a significant increase in cases of plagiarism in recent years, with observers suspecting that many more cases go undetected and/or unreported. While sophisticated online services can help with the detection of web-based plagiarism, long-term deterrence lies with appropriate course design and effective institutional policies.

By exploring their real-life uses (and in some cases their limitations) you will leave equipped with a practical understanding of the most useful tools that CSS offers the web developer - so that you can immediately start to use them to build creative, accessible, standards-compliant style into your own web sites.
