Is it possible to install other applications to AccessApps?

Yes as long as the application has a portable version. You can usually find these using your preferred search engine using the keyword 'portable' followed by the application you would like to add. Below are instructions for adding your own applications to the AccessApps menu:

  1. Download a portable version of the application you would like to add.
  2. Install/extract the downloaded file to the 'Applications' folder of your USB stick.
  3. Open the AccessApps menu by clicking the AccessApps icon in the systems tray.
  4. Click on a button labeled 'ASuite' (right hand side towards the top). You should see the menu structure of all the installed applications
  5. Right click on the folder you would like to add your application to and select 'Add software'
  6. In the 'Properties' dialog window which opens click on 'Browse'.
  7. Navigate to the folder of the application you are adding and double click on the file used to launch that application, usually *.exe.
  8. This should take you back to the Properties dialog. Click on 'Retrieve', which should populate the fields with the program information (if not fill in the fields as appropriate) then click OK.

When you click on the AccessApps icon in the system tray you should now see your new application listed in the menu.

Does AccessApps work with JAWS?

AccessApps does work with the JAWS screen reader. You do however have to switch to the 'Classic Menu'. The instructions below tell you how to do this:

  1. Place the AccessApps USB drive into a free USB port on your computer
  2. When the AutoStart menu appears select 'Start using RSC AccessApps'
  3. Press and hold the Alt key followed by the A key
  4. Press the T key to activate the Options dialogue box - there are 3 tab labels, General, Advanced and Various.
  5. Press the right arrow key on the number keypad until you come to the Various tab
  6. Press the tab key until you hear the menu item 'Use classic menu' - use the spacebar to check the tick box item.
  7. Press the tab key until you come to Okay - select Okay.
  8. Finally start AccessApps by holding down the Alt key and pressing the A key

When I extract AccessApps my anti-virus software detects a virus. Is AccessApps infected?

We've had some reports that the file StrandedII.exe is reported by some anti-virus software as a Trojan Horse (usually Trojan horse PSW.Goldun.KE.). To the best of our knowledge this is a false alarm caused by anti-virus software erroneously detecting a small proportion of the code. This forum has recently discussed the problem.

Does the AccessApps work on a Mac computer?

AccessApps doesn’t currently work with Mac. A number of applications do however have installable Mac versions (e.g. Scribus, VLC, Dasher and Audacity). We are currently researching a cross platform version of AccessApps and will update our information as we go along.

I get an error message when trying to use BBC Radio and BBC Listen Again. Is there a way of fixing it?

BBC services require RealPlayer. If you do not have this installed you can download a free copy from www.real.com

I get the error message 'Cannot find specified application'.

It sounds like you've copied the files onto your usb drive into an extra folder.

When you've downloaded the zip file and extracted the contents you need to place the 3 folders and 2 files into the root of the drive (i.e. not in a folder). Here's a short video outlining these steps.
